Congresswoman Maxine Waters Statement on the Trump Shutdown

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-43), Ranking Member of the House Financial Services Committee, released the following statement upon the passage of a continuing resolution which ended the Trump Shutdown:

"The Trump Shutdown was nothing more than a political shake down by a morally bankrupt, inexperienced, and untrustworthy president, who has been enabled by Congressional Republicans and believes that the bullying and intimidation tactics he employed in his real-estate deals will work in the United States government.

"A responsible and experienced legislator would realize that even a temporary shutdown could have a devastating impact on the economy, federal agencies, and federal employees and contractors across the country who become immediately and indefinitely furloughed. Instead, we have Donald Trump: a political amateur who rejected a compromise deal that was presented to him by a bipartisan group of Senators, thus ensuring the Trump Shutdown. Such irresponsibility cannot be overstated.

"Despite the attempts by Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans to lie and distort the facts, the American people know the truth. This Trump Shutdown was caused by Donald Trump, for the sole benefit of Donald Trump and his dangerous agenda.

"I continue to stand with my Democratic colleagues who voted no on the government funding bill. We will continue to fight for a budget that is reflective of our values and priorities which include providing disaster relief from hurricanes, floods, and wildfires such as those which impacted my home state of California; funding for our veterans and the military; protection for the DREAMers; reauthorization of community health center funding; and pension protection for American workers."
